The Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award, presented by the New York University Abu Dhabi Institute (NYUADI) and in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF), has been established to nurture artistic talent in the United Arab Emirates. It is given for the proposal and creation of an artwork that, in the spirit of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s work, can be publicly exhibited and enjoyed.
Entrants may select any media with which to work including, but not limited to, photography, sculpture, installation, land art, and video. They are encouraged to think creatively about how to exhibit their work; the judges will look for ideas that challenge the conventional exhibiting format of the ‘white cube’ gallery space. To apply, all entrants need to complete an application form, which includes a proposed budget.
The winning artist will directly receive $5000 to enable the production of the new work. An additional $15,000 will be made available to fund and promote the touring solo exhibition of the winning work in 2014. NYUADI may request receipts to ensure spending is consistent with the award.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude have been creating monumental works on a huge scale for over half a century, including the wrapping of The Reichstag in Berlin and The Gates in Central Park, New York. Their drawings are held by many major museums, galleries, and collections around the world, including the Guggenheim New York, Tate London, and the Centre Pompidou Paris.
