Tolerance is a demanding social project, as the strident, often violent claims of intolerance make clear. This year-long lecture series probes the complexities and modalities of tolerance, not solely as a matter of individual virtue but as a social and political challenge. The lectures explore the limits and demands of tolerance when under pressure by fervently held religious, sexual, social, and political beliefs. Following the 2009-10 series on the Cosmopolitan Idea, this program continues our investigation of core values of NYUAD, which is forging an unusually diverse community based on intercultural understanding and respect.
