Renowned scholar of Arabian Peninsula lore and oral culture, Professor Saad Sowayan will be engaged in conversation about his Nabati Poetry project. This is a multi-faceted interdisciplinary project that has been researched for decades and that includes: socio-linguistic, aesthetic, literary, historical, and socio-cultural examinations of the poetic material and its associated narratives. It is the result of years of field work, issuing also from the study of manuscripts and published material in Arabic and European languages. Its scope is vast and quite unique, forming an invaluable register of recent and pre-modern Arabian culture. (An excellent overview of the project and related work can be had at www.saadsowayan.com.) This conversation will show the project's potential for engagement with historical, political and literary scholarship alike.

Bernard Haykel is a Professor in Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University, and The Director of the Institute for Transregional Study of the Contemporary Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia.

Philip F. Kennedy is the Faculty Director for the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute and Associate Professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies and Comparative Literature at New York University.

The conference will focus on key legal, policy, and regulatory issues surrounding the expanding markets in carbon and climate finance. Issues for discussion include new proposals for international post-Kyoto arrangements to finance greenhouse gas limitations and forest preservation in developing countries; the design, governance and linkage of carbon markets; climate-related conditions on development finance; international trade and investment law governing climate regulation, and the related tax and distributional consequences.

Conference participants include leading representatives of the climate finance industry, carbon market regulators, developing countries, multinational businesses, sovereign wealth funds, international organizations, and NGOs as well as academic experts. NYU and other academics, international and government officials, expert practitioners and NGO and business representatives will present papers on key legal, policy, and regulatory issues associated with climate finance and development in order to frame discussion and debate among all participants.

Richard Stewart is the John Edward Sexton Professor of Law, Chair and Faculty Director of Houser Global Law School Program, and Director of the Center for Environmental and Land Use Law at New York University.

Benedict Kingsbury is the Murry and Ida Becker Professor of Law, and Chair of the Graduate Divison at the School of Law at New York University.

There is growing consensus around the pressing need for global collaboration in designing a new climate change agreement to succeed the Kyoto Protocol. With all eyes looking to the next round of negotiations in Copenhagen in December, Professor Oppenheimer, a leading expert in both the science and policy of climate change will address the question, Why the urgency? Scientific understanding indicates that the risk of dangerous climate change would increase sharply absent prompt action to curb global greenhouse gas emissions. Professor Oppenheimer’s presentation will highlight the scientific underpinnings of sensible policy responses and the need for truly global action to reduce emissions.
