Research at the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute

David W. McLaughlin, Provost, NYU
Al Bloom, Vice Chancellor for NYU Abu Dhabi

The NYU Abu Dhabi Institute is inviting applications for a second round of competition for support of research and scholarly activities to be conducted at NYUAD.  The Institute will provide funding at a significant level and with exceptional continuity.

Eligible faculty investigators are invited to submit (a) Full Proposals for fellowships; and (b) Pre-Proposals for scholarly groups and research centers, creative/performance groups, and experimental laboratories.  Proposals for each category are invited from investigators in all disciplines, departments and schools of NYU.  Projects will be housed in interim facilities and continuing projects will be relocated to the Saadiyat Island campus when it is completed in 2014.

See Guidelines and Instructions for Applications for Pre-Proposals and Proposals
The timeline is as follows:

Full Proposals for individual fellowships

• August 1, 2010 Pre-Proposals are due.
• February 2011 Awards for Proposals are announced.
• September 2011 Expected start date for awarded projects.

Pre-Proposals for scholarly groups and research centers, creative/performance groups, and experimental laboratories

• August 1, 2010 Pre-Proposals are due
• November 2010 Invitations to prepare Full Proposals based on evaluation of Pre-Proposals are issued. Further instructions are issued for preparation of invited Full Proposals.
• March 2011 Full Proposals by invitation are due.
• August 2011 Awards for Proposals are announced.
• January 2012 Earliest start date for awarded projects.

This timeline is coordinated with the progress and schedule for the development of academic programs at NYU Abu Dhabi, and the construction of the facilities of the Saadiyat Island campus.  The timetable will also enable NYU investigators to take advantage of the potential for research collaborations with NYU Abu Dhabi standing faculty, whose recruitment is ongoing.

Information Session

An information session, open to all eligible investigators and department and school administrators, will be held on Tuesday, May 18 from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. at 19 Washington Square North.

To date, NYUAD awarded funding to three lead-off research projects spanning the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering.  The research projects, which will cumulatively receive some $20 million over five years, were selected by the NYU Abu Dhabi Research Review Council, composed of members of the senior leadership of the New York and Abu Dhabi campuses, after an intensive process of internal and external peer review. See the press release for more information

This fall, NYU Abu Dhabi will announce the next group of recipients of research grants from the Institute’s current round of competition.  Of the 21 Pre-Proposals that were submitted for consideration, eight were invited to submit Full Proposals.
