David W. McLaughlin, Provost, NYU
Al Bloom, Vice Chancellor for NYU Abu Dhabi
The NYU Abu Dhabi Institute is inviting applications for support of research and scholarly activities to be conducted at the Saadiyat Island Campus of NYU Abu Dhabi. These applications could be Pre-Proposals for (a) Scholarly Groups and Research Centers, Experimental Laboratories, and Signature Initiatives, or Full Proposals for (b) Fellowships and for Creative/Performance Projects. The revised deadline is July 1, 2010, superseding the previously announced deadlines of October 2009 and March 2010.
The NYU Abu Dhabi Institute will be operating in the interim facilities in downtown Abu Dhabi until at least the Fall of 2013, when the permanent campus on Saadiyat Island is expected to open. The projects that are being solicited through this announcement will not start before that time.
The timetable is as follows:
- An information session, open to all applicants, will be convened in Spring 2010 to provide guidance on the development of project scope, budget, facilities, and a more accurate timetable for the development of the Saadiyat Island Campus;
- Pre-Proposals for Category (a) and Full Proposals for Category (b) are due July 1, 2010;
- Invitations for Full Proposals, based on the preliminary evaluation of the pre-proposals for Category (a), will be issued by October 1, 2010;
- Full proposals for category (a) will be due February 1, 2011;
- Awards will be announced by July 1, 2011.
The revised July 2010 application deadline is the result of coordination with the progress and schedule for the recruitment of the standing faculty for NYU Abu Dhabi, development of its academic programs, and construction of the physical facilities of the Saadiyat Island campus. The new timetable will provide sufficient time for successful investigators to plan the staff, equipment and facilities for projects to begin after Fall 2013. It will also enable NYU investigators to take advantage of the potential for research collaborations with NYU Abu Dhabi standing faculty, whose recruitment will continue through the coming academic year.
Instructions for submitting Pre-Proposals and Proposals are available in the Application Instructions.
In July 2009, the NYU Abu Dhabi Research Review Council accepted Pre-Proposals for projects that could be housed, at least initially, in the interim facilities in Abu Dhabi. These Pre-Proposals are under review and invitations to submit Full Proposals will be issued by mid-November, 2009. The Council also accepted Full Proposalsfor Fellowships and Creative/Performance Projects; these awards will also be announced by mid-November 2009.
The NYU Abu Dhabi Institute will provide funding for research and scholarship in Abu Dhabi at a significant level and with exceptional continuity of support. See the Provost’s statement about the vision, goals and organization of research at NYU Abu Dhabi Institute.
