NYUADI Research Grants
Fellowships for Individual Scholars

Round II: Application Deadline August 1, 2010

Full Proposals for individual fellowships

• August 1, 2010 Full Proposals are due.
• February 2011 Awards are announced.
• September 2011 Expected start date for awarded projects.

Fellowships will be housed in interim facilities pending completion of the permanent Saadiyat Island campus in 2014. Additional rounds of competition for Fellowships may be announced at a later date, depending on availability of funds.

Eligibility to Obtain Support

Faculty from all disciplines and the full range of departments and schools are invited to apply. Applicants must be full-time NYU faculty who are tenured or on tenure-track, or who are Arts Professors (all ranks) in the Tisch School of the Arts, or Music Professors (all ranks) in The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, or Clinical Professors in the Arts (all ranks) in The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development (or recruits to these faculties). NYUAD Standing Faculty (and recruits to that faculty) are also eligible to apply.

There are no restrictions on the number of Principal Investigators who may apply from the same department, assuming that the Department Chair and Dean agree with the arrangements.

Duration of Support

Fellowships are meant for individual scholars, who wish to engage in activities in Abu Dhabi such as writing books or planning books for which regional knowledge is essential; and for creative writers and artists in residence. The fellowship duration may vary from six months to two years. The stay in Abu Dhabi can be combined with a sabbatical from NYU.

Criteria for Awarding Support

Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Quality of scholarly or creative content
  • Scholarly strength and record of the applicant(s) and ability to undertake the project successfully, including appropriate commitment of time at NYUAD
  • Potential for advancing the mission of NYU, including integration of the NYUAD project with research and projects at NYU in New York
  • When appropriate to the project, relevance to the region

Conditions of Support

As a condition of support, all research funded by NYUAD will require the frequent and regular presence of award recipients at NYUAD. Fellows are expected to be active members of the community on the NYUAD campus, contributing significantly to its intellectual life and environment, and when invited, teaching in its undergraduate program.

Commitment of Time at NYUAD

Scholars on fellowship awards will typically be located in Abu Dhabi for most of the duration of the award. Recipients who relocate to NYU Abu Dhabi will receive a full package of competitive benefits for themselves and their immediate families, including housing, travel allowances, and private school tuition.

Department and School Approval of Proposed Project

All projects must have the support and approval of Department Chairs and School Deans. Applicants must consult, reach agreement with and obtain the approval of their Department Chair and Dean.
