Goals and Organization of NYUAD Institute
The NYUAD Institute is offering substantial and sustained funding to support high-level research of NYU faculty. The Institute supports disciplinary and multi-disciplinary initiatives at NYU Abu Dhabi that advance knowledge in innovative ways, extend the research and creative missions of NYU and its global network, and sustain an organic connection and vigorous flow of information, ideas and people between NYU in New York and NYU Abu Dhabi. While some projects may launch research in areas essentially new to NYU, the Institute also welcomes proposals that enhance, complement, or extend research programs at NYU in New York. The research environment at the NYUAD Institute will be further enhanced by partnerships with international colleagues, collaborations with academic institutions in the United Arab Emirates and throughout the region, cooperative ventures with local research and industry, and a robust schedule of visiting scholars from all over the world in Institute conferences, workshops, and other public and invitational programs. By supporting research on critical problems in and across disciplines, and attracting an international cohort of scholars, scientists, and creative leaders, the NYUAD Institute is poised to build an innovative research capacity in Abu Dhabi fully interconnected with NYUNY, and thus, to catalyze the development of Abu Dhabi as a capital of ideas, research, and education.
The structure of research at the Institute is flexible. It will include teams of investigators conducting long-term research and led by a Principal Investigator and co-Principal Investigators; scholarly research centers, for instance in the social sciences and humanities; large-scale theoretical, computational, laboratory-based experimental and observational research teams; and creative/performance projects in the arts. Support is also available for fellowships for individual scholars, including creative writers and artists.
The nature and type of support, the duration of funding cycles, and the mix of the research, creative, and technical projects will vary by field and even within a field, depending upon the objective and style of research. Proposals are invited for funding to support the following kinds of projects in all disciplines (the social sciences, professions, humanities, arts, theoretical and computational sciences, sciences and engineering):
- Fellowships for individual scholars;
- Scholarly Groups and Research Centers;
- Creative/Performance Groups;
- Experimental Laboratories (analogous to ‘centers’ in the experimental sciences).
