Call for Program Proposals

The NYU Abu Dhabi Institute (NYUADI) sponsors and coordinates a diverse range of scholarly and public programs in Abu Dhabi. Most programs are generated through proposals from NYU faculty that are evaluated in a peer review process by the NYUADI Advisory Committee.  Some programs are directly commissioned by the NYUADI. The breadth of its programming enables the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute to form organic intellectual and programmatic links between NYUNY and NYU Abu Dhabi in support of the goals they are pursuing in Abu Dhabi. Those links will be further enhanced by major research grants under the auspices of NYUADI, which are governed by an entirely separate process. Read more about research grants.

Outline of Review Process

The NYUADI Advisory Committee will review all proposals for Conferences, Workshops, Regional Collaborative Seminars, Film Series, Performances and Exhibitions at the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute. Proposals for Distinguished Lectures, Special Series, and Conversations with Authors, which may be solicited by, or submitted to, the Institute’s Faculty Director independently by eligible faculty members, will normally not be reviewed by the Advisory Committee. Definitions of all program categories are provided in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) documents, which are found below.

Following procedures outlined in the MOU, program proposers will be expected to submit to the Advisory Committee a Draft Commitment Memorandum. It will be revised as part of a two-stage approval process. The Advisory Committee’s review of the Draft Commitment Memorandum, if favorable, would result in a conditional approval of the proposal, after which the Program Organizer will be required to submit to the Committee a Final Commitment Memorandum. During either stage of the approval process the Advisory Committee may decline the opportunity to consider the proposal further or recommend re-submission in a subsequent application period. The Chair of the Advisory Committee will provide the proposer with a rationale in writing for the Committee’s decision.

The MOU describes in greater detail the two-phase review process. Program proposers are well-advised to read the entire MOU documentation carefully before submitting a formal proposal.

Eligibility

Program Organizers must be full-time, tenured or tenure-track NYU or NYU Abu Dhabi faculty (or recruits to these faculties); or faculty who are tenured or tenure-track, or who are Arts Professors (all ranks) in the Tisch School of the Arts; or Music Professors (all ranks) in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development; or Clinical Professors in the Arts (all ranks) in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development (or recruits to these faculties).

Selection Criteria

Proposals will be reviewed on the following criteria:

  • Highest quality of scholarly or creative content;
  • Innovation in and contribution to the discipline;
  • Potential contribution to NYU Abu Dhabi curricular development;
  • Likelihood of stimulating scholarly U.A.E. and regional participation and local audience interest;
  • Clarity of the goals in relation to the mission of NYU Abu Dhabi and the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute;
  • Prospects for generating a significant scholarly publication and for creating a strong, sustainable intellectual community associated with NYU Abu Dhabi

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

All relevant guidelines and procedures for NYUADI programs and activities are identified in the Institute’s MOU.

Advisory Committee

Proposals will be reviewed by the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute Advisory Committee.  Committee members, who serve for at least one year and at most three years, are drawn from across the disciplines and schools of NYU, and appointed by the NYU Abu Dhabi Provost.  The Committee will evaluate submitted proposals on the basis of the selection criteria, and will recommend proposals for approval, with suggested modifications as appropriate. Timing of the implementation of approved proposals will depend on the programming needs of the Institute.
The Committee members for the 2009-10 academic year are:

Reindert Falkenburg, Chair
Thomas Bender
Claude Desplan
Sunil Kumar
Michele Marincola
Kevin McCoy
Pascal Menoret
