Inauguration of President Andrew Hamilton

Following NYU's Inauguration Celebration Week — a week-long series of special events that shared the innovation, vision, and character driving NYU's global community — NYU Abu Dhabi held it's own celebration on October 10 to officially welcome Andrew D. Hamilton as the 16th president of NYU.

NYU Abu Dhabi Vice Chancellor Al Bloom:

"When the Presidential transition began, we began to imagine the qualities of an ideal president for this campus and for the university as a whole-- someone who would inspire and lead in building on the vision that had been set, that we have developed since, and that has been at the heart of our success; someone with outstanding academic and administrative credentials, someone with practiced commitment to academic pursuit and quality, someone with extensive global experience and broad global perspective, someone with resolve and capacity to develop empowered and inclusive communities across our campuses and the world; someone who appreciates the role of undergraduate education in imparting not only the foundational skills for success in careers, but the critical thinking, ethical complexity and global embrace required to lead within and across careers an interdependent and highly vulnerable global world;

Someone who values both conceptual advance and the contribution that advance can and must make to a better world, someone determined to support NYU’s continued emergence as the preeminent global university and NYUAD’s distinctive contributions to that advance; and someone determined to move universities, more broadly, into roles of greater influence in shaping the qualities and directions of our world.

I am sure, and ever more sure as I work with Andy, that Andy will be such a president."

NYU President Andrew Hamilton:

"Thanks to your hard work, creativity, and dedication, NYU Abu Dhabi is a prime example of the boldness in action that has marked NYU’s history and has led to extraordinary achievement...And of course NYU Abu Dhabi makes up part of a larger innovation: NYU’s extensive global network. NYU is rightly known as a prominent global presence. Along with NYU Abu Dhabi are NYU Shanghai, with its own outstanding resident faculty and talented students; 11 other sites on six continents at which NYU undergraduates can study abroad and graduate students and faculty can pursue research; the largest number of students studying abroad AND the largest group of international students attending any US university. Any one of these accomplishments alone would have been reason for pride; that all of this has been achieved is remarkable.

And it is not simply that this record differentiates NYU – it makes us inimitable. Unlike other universities, we are not bound to a single location, but rather benefit from and contribute to the richness of the world. There has never been a time when bold action on global education is more urgently needed than now. In the face of destructive public discourse on immigration, suspicion of entire religions and ethnic groups, and a range of problems – from climate change to ideological extremism – that defy borders, it is essential that we choose not to retreat but to engage."
