Jessica Mein’s painstaking and intricate projects begin as drawings, morph into collages, and occasionally come to life as stop-motion animations. Each body of work enacts a focused meditation on a single subject or moment: a billboard’s installation, a fruit stand, the text of an entire book, a single gesture, or, in the case of Sliced Sky, the huge power lines that span the periphery of Dubai and its surroundings. Also on view is the related video Blackout (2012), in which she animates collages from the series. Lasting only 2 minutes, this video comprises more than 700 drawings, collages, and cut-paper stills.
Jessica Mein has exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions at Galeria Leme (São Paulo, Brazil); The Pavilion Downtown (Dubai); Simon Preston Gallery (New York), as well as important group exhibitions at the Julia Stoschek Foundation (Germany), Museo Tamayo de Arte Contemporaneo (Mexico); and El Museo del Barrio (New York), among others. Her work has entered numerous collections, including that of The Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the Julia Stoschek Collection (Germany). She was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and lives and works between New York, São Paulo and Dubai. This is her second solo show in the UAE.
Sliced Sky is a traveling exhibition and is currently on view at 19 Washington Square in New York through December 6, 2013.
