Transportation for Smart Cities Symposium

By Invitation Only

Date

Location NYUAD Saadiyat Island Campus, Humanities Building (A6)

Demographic forecasts indicate the world population will reach 9 billion by the year 2050 with 70% of the world's population living in urban areas. A strong emphasis on solving problems faced by people living in the world’s cities is therefore needed. Some of the main challenges lie in addressing unmet and growing needs for mobility, while at the same time greatly reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources.

The Transportation for Smart Cities Symposium provided a forum for learning about recent developments of cost-effective solutions to address urban mobility needs.

Topic dicussed included:

  • Advances in traffic flow modeling
  • Planning of smart grids and electric vehicle fleets
  • Streaming data analytics and machine learning for mobility tracking and prediction
  • The use of smart phones to incentivize more sustainable travel choices
  • The development and deployment of sensors for real-time monitoring and real time control of traffic flow conditions

The Symposium was held on March 25 and 26 at the campus of New York University Abu Dhabi. It brought together international experts from academia and industry, representatives of transportation local agencies in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and NYUAD faculty.

The first day consisted of presentations by researchers, and the second day involved breakout sessions that included agency representatives with researchers, with the intent to identify specific research advances that are relevant to each transportation agency.
