Orientation at NYU Abu Dhabi, called Marhaba (which means welcome in Arabic) is led by the Office of First Year Experience. It is a collaborative effort with Campus Life, faculty, administration, and student orientation leaders to facilitate new students’ transition to the NYUAD community.

By the end of Marhaba, students will:

  • Begin to contextualize Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, and the United Arab Emirates
  • Receive orientation to campus, student resources, and community expectations
  • Establish connections with each other and as a class
  • Begin to navigate cultural understandings
  • Be introduced to the academic program

Marhaba Events

A range of orientation sessions, optional activities, and evening entertainment is offered during Marhaba. Sample sessions and activities include:

  • Connections: Bringing first years into the NYUAD community
  • An introduction to First Year Dialogue (FYD), our mandatory first year seminar
  • Academic deans and department overviews
  • Campus tours
  • Exercises in building intercultural understanding
  • Visits into Abu Dhabi
  • Trips to Ikea and some of the malls in Abu Dhabi
  • Academic integrity workshops
  • Student variety show

Please note that all students admitted to NYUAD as part of the Class of 2021 will receive an email in early May with information about how to set up their NYUAD email address and how to gain access to the NYUAD Student Portal. Until students have received this email, they will not be able to access the Student Portal.
