Biography

B.A. Williams College; Ph.D. Cornell University

Phillip Mitsis works on Greek and Roman epic and drama as well as on ancient philosophy and its reception in the early modern period. He has taught a wide variety of undergraduate humanities courses at NYUNY and NYUAD that focus on ancient, medieval, and modern philosophical, historical, literary, and legal texts. His most recent graduate teaching includes courses on Sophocles, Plato, Aristotle, Lucretius and Seneca.  He also serves as the Academic Director of the American Institute for Verdi Studies.  At present, he is working on a book on the ethical theory of John Locke and collecting materials for a book on the French filmmaker Jean Vigo.
