Dr Baias did her Ph.D. at RWTH-Aachen University, Germany, in the group of Professor Bernhard Bluemich, where she worked on experimental solid-state NMR methods to analyse polymers with possible applications for fuel cells and to characterize the thermal denaturation of proteins. Part of her research was focused on the application of the NMR-MOUSE for cultural heritage, especially for the study of ancient mummies and bones.
After finishing her Ph.D. she moved to London for a postdoc with Professor Chris Pickard at University College London, where she started working with computational methods for the characterization of the crystal structure of materials, such as elemental phosphorus, perovskites and ice. She did a second postdoc in Lyon, France, with Professor Lyndon Emsley, where she worked on NMR crystallography of small molecules by combining computational crystal structure prediction with solid-state NMR experiments and DFT calculations of NMR parameters to determine the crystal structure of drugs and metal organic frameworks.
After her postdoc in Lyon she moved to Rehovot, Israel, for a third postdoc at the Weizmann Institute of Science in the group of Professor Lucio Frydman, where she used solution state NMR and molecular dynamics simulations to understand the structure and dynamics of the N-terminal fragment of the huntingtin protein, which is responsible for the Huntington disease.
Dr Baias’s research at NYUAD is focused on developing methods for high-pressure NMR crystallography with the aim to characterize polymorphism in complex crystalline materials when subjected to high pressure conditions.
