Abu Dhabi is located in the heart of the Middle East, on the southwestern coast of the Gulf. It is the capital of both the emirate of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi is the largest of the emirates in the U.A.E. both in terms of physical area and population. It covers 87% of the country's total area, and according to the 2005 census, Abu Dhabi has a population of 1.3 million, of which 27% are U.A.E. citizens.
At this moment, Abu Dhabi is especially well poised to develop a liberal arts and science-based research university on NYU's cosmopolitan model. The international composition, rigorous academic program, and rich array of extracurricular options that will characterize NYU Abu Dhabi are aligned with the Emirate's ambitious vision for its development into a leading global city. The city's Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 provides a deeply thoughtful framework in which NYU Abu Dhabi can become a contributing force for urban development and social and educational progress. Comprehensive research universities have played such animating roles in their host cities since their medieval inception. Abu Dhabi does not currently have such an institution. NYU in New York will transfer the benefits of its international prominence and truly worldwide network of thinkers, scholars, scientists, artists, and leaders in all fields of human enterprise to Abu Dhabi.
